Getting Fat on Pizza in Naples (And Other Food in Europe)

I know I don’t usually tackle the heavy issues, but today you’re in for a treat. I was in Athens killing time in a pharmacy (while Gia tried to find medicine for her sore throat) when I saw a set of scales. I hadn’t weighed myself in a long time, but I was shocked to find that I was over 5 kgs heavier than I’d ever been. I thought the scales were wrong, but a week later I got the same reading in a pharmacy in Fez, Morocco. My weight has always fluctuated, and I have been exercising a bit so hopefully it’s not all fat, but it did get me thinking about all of the unhealthy food I’ve been eating in Europe, and gorging myself on pizza in Naples seems to be the main culprit (but certainly not the only one). Here’s a list of all the nice (but unhealthy) food I’ve been eating in Europe – let me know if you’ve tried any!

Pizza in Naples

Naples (Italy) is the home of pizza, so obviously I was going to eat a lot of it. We stayed there for 4 nights and ate pizza every night for dinner and once for lunch – we had even graduated to eating a pizza each by the end. Pizza in Naples, specifically the margarita variety, is definitely some of the best I’ve eaten, and it’s refreshing not having to order pizzas stacked with ingredients to make them taste good – all you really need is a good base, tomato and cheese (as long as it’s cooked right). There are a couple of famous pizza restaurants in Naples, and we went to one on the first day, but we got a bit lazy from then on in (and Naples is a bit dodgy at night) so we ate close to our hotel, and it was just as good. I’ve heard of people queuing for hours to get a pizza, but ditch the lines and go to one of the less popular restaurants – you won’t notice the difference.

Dristor Doner in Bucharest

Bucharest was our first destination in continental Europe, and the kebabs at Dristor Doner sowed the seeds for my expanding stomach. I’ve lost most of that weight now, but if I ever find myself back in Bucharest a meal of the best kebabs I’ve ever tried will definitely be on the menu.

Churros and Chocolate in Spain

I’d never heard of this Spanish desert – it’s basically long straight donuts dipped in hot chocolate sauce and it’s the perfect treat on cold winter nights. Come to think of it, it might not actually be a desert, as we saw a lot of people in Granada eating it at about 6pm, which seemed strange!

Gelato in Italy

Even though it was November, we ate gelato in every town we went to in Italy. The best was probably the coconut, orange and mixed fruit one we had in Rome – but every cone of gelato we had was worth the £2 – €2.5!

Milka Chocolate: Everywhere

Looking like Cadburys’ twin brother, Milka chocolate has been our go to snack in Europe. We’ve tried almost all of the flavours, my favourites being Chips Ahoy, Oreo and white chocolate. Apparently a little bit of chocolate is good for you, but not in the volumes we’ve been eating it in. We’ve actually toned down our chocolate intake recently, but there’s always a little room for Milka in our diet.

Hungarian Food in Budapest

Budapest is my favourite city in Europe for many reasons, a big one being the food. It’s fairly cheap to eat well in Budapest (as opposed to a lot of places in Europe) – we ate at the Drum Cafe a lot over the 5 days we visited and the food was amazing for what we paid. I have no ability for describing food, but you have to try the langosh, goulash and this chicken pancake thing covered in some kind of sauce (I can’t really remember the flavour!)

Billa Chocolate Cereal: Romania/Central Europe

We ate this in every place that we had a fridge in Romania/Central Europe and the cereal alone was enough to get us out of bed every morning (as well as all of the sightseeing of course). The cereal (From the supermarket Billa) is full of big pieces of chocolate and I’m pretty sure it’s really unhealthy, but we really started to miss it by the time we left central Europe and moved on to Italy. Our breakfasts haven’t been the same since!

Custard Tarts in Portugal

You can find these in pretty much any bakery in Lisbon (and probably every other city in Portugal) – if you love sweet pastry things (did I mention I’m useless at describing food) then make sure you try some. On another note, Lisbon is awesome, check out the post below.
