Trying to Feel Like a Travel Blogger Again

Looking after a 16-month toddler day in and day out is a sure-fire way to lose your spark for travel blogging. It’s a far different scene than the old days, when I was either travelling all the time or hanging out at home (playing golf, hanging out with Gia, exploring the South Island and heaps of time for writing).

Throw in a less than optimistic outlook for the future of small publisher blogging (AI, algorithm changes) and it’s not surprising I decided to park my blogs to one side for a few months while doing the bare minimum to keep them ticking over.

Being a travel blogger was a career (not a well-paid one), hobby and identity that I was proud of. Being a dad and watching my boy grow every day is something I’m even more proud of. I wouldn’t change this last 16 months for anything but I reckon it’s time to give my two other babies (my travel blogs) a bit more attention.

Getting to Know My Camera Again

One thing I’ve noticed over the last year and a half is that I’ve hardly taken any photos. I used to take my camera everywhere, but these days it just adds to a bag that’s already full of food, spare clothes and other toddler equipment. That changes today. I live in a beautiful city and there’s always something interesting to photograph so it shouldn’t be hard!

Posting Every Week

I posted three times a week during the early days of this blog, way back in 2013. That dropped to once a week when I was travelling full-time and stayed that way up until Covid. The events of 2020 affected this blog far more than having a baby did and I earned very little money for the next two years or so.

Posting slipped to once a month and lately, sometimes once every two months. I’m keen to get back to posting once a week (on each blog) and this alone should make me feel much more like a travel blogger!

Social Media

I’ve never been good at social media and it’s the side of blogging that I have neglected the most. I’ll start by posting more on Instagram and Facebook but I think TikTok is a bridge too far.

More Travel

The biggest key in getting back into travel blogging is travelling more! We have some trips around New Zealand planned and we’ll probably travel overseas again later this year. We got back from our trip to Singapore, the Philippines and Japan in November and I still have lots to write about so expect to see lots of posts about that in the near future!

I’ll be trying to post here every week (usually on a Thursday) to check back and tell your friends!
