Nong Khiaw to Muang Ngoi, Laos: An Awesome Boat Ride

Boats on the river on the journey from Nong Khiaw to Muang Ngoi

Laos is full of idyllic riverside towns and taking a boat between 2 of the most beautiful ones, from Nong Khiaw to Muang Ngoi, was one of my favourite experiences in Southeast Asia’s most laidback country.  This stretch of the Nam Ou River is particularly stunning; the only problem is that the boats aren’t built with photography … Read more

Cities and Their Celebrity Doubles: Vientiane / Robert Downey Jr.

Patuxai park in Vientiane, Laos

Vientiane wasn’t always the laid back, family friendly Lao capital you see today. For a period in the 1960’s and 70’s it was a town where anything went, where foreign spies mixed with prostitutes in city bars; a place you probably wouldn’t take your wife and kids to. The same can be said for Robert … Read more

The Rat Factor: What is the Cleanest Country in Southeast Asia?

The rat factor: What is the cleanest country in Southeast Asia?

Everyone says not to judge books by their covers, but if you’re lazily looking for a quick way to review them then there really is no better way. I took the same attitude when trying to decide the cleanest country in Southeast Asia. Sure, I could have done a whole lot of research and bombarded you with facts and figures – but to be honest, the only figure I really care about is the number of rats I see (I have a fear of rats, check out this post to find out why). The rat factor may be a flawed system, but it’s as good as any other and could 1 day be the official cleanliness yardstick in respected publications like Lonely Planet (as long as they pay me for using my idea!).

Nong Khiaw: A Quiet Corner of Laos

The Nam Ou River in Nong Khiaw, Laos

“But Jon, isn’t pretty much everywhere in Laos quiet?” Yes, but quiet isn’t always created equal, and while you might find plenty of laid back places in Laos, none are likely to be in a more scenic location (and provide you with more travelling comforts) than Nong Khiaw. Sure, you could rent a motorbike and … Read more

Are Kuang Si Falls the Best Waterfalls in Southeast Asia?

Kuang Si falls, waterfalls close to Luang Prabang, Laos

Yes. I could end this post right there and just point you towards the photos, but since I’ve already abused the photo essay phenomenon in a previous post, I’ll spin you a story about this wonder of Southeast Asia. Heading out onto the Laotian highway, with a faint idea of which direction I was going, … Read more

Changes in Vang Vieng, Laos: Should you Still Go?

A farm in Vang Vieng, Laos

Are drugs, bikini clad women in the middle of town, and blatant disrespect for a modest culture not really your thing? You’re in luck, as all of those dodgy (and some might say fun) things are no longer a reality in Vang Vieng, Laos. I was lucky enough to visit just before and just after … Read more

Don Det: One of the Best Places to Relax in Southeast Asia

Don Det, on of the 4000 Islands in Laos

While researching southern Laos I stumbled across two interesting facts: 1.) Laos, the only landlocked country in Southeast Asia, has islands. 2.) It doesn’t just have one or two; apparently there are 4000 of them! That was more than enough information to convince me to check them out, so off I went on an all … Read more
